Synopsis:

In the summer of 2004, Debbie Lafave, a 23 year old schoolteacher from Florida, was arrested for allegedly having numerous sexual encounters with her 14 year old 8th grade student. She has pleaded “not guilty” by reason of insanity; her trial is set for April 2005.

Months after the tragedy, Owen Lafave, her husband of less than one year, wants answers. He has teamed up with a documentary crew to narrate and explore the truth and reasons behind the rise in cases of child molestation by teachers in our schools.

“After School” is a disturbing look at a plague affecting our families and, more importantly, our children.

Police Report: Middle School Sex Scandal. According to the boy, whose name was redacted from the document by police, his relationship with Lafave began with a week left in the 2003-4 school year, when "she became affectionate." The student then went on to detail encounters with Lafave in her Greco Middle School classroom, an automobile, and the woman's Tampa-area home. The relationship between suspended middle school teacher Debra Beasley Lafave and the 14-year-old student she is accused of having sex with appeared to be one of mutual attraction, court documents released Thursday indicated. In his statement - which is written in the childish scrawl of a young teen - the victim revealed how he became entangled in an affair with the comely teacher. "She told me that she had feeling for me," he wrote. "She told me that she was thinking about me a lot and had feeling for me [and] she didn't know what to do with them. In the calls, Debra LaFave speaks with the boy about the affair they were allegedly having and the student expresses concerns that the middle school teacher might be pregnant. When a young Hillsborough County teacher was accused this summer of having a sexual affair with a 14-year-old student, many people's first reaction to the notorious case was, 'She's crazy.' Tuesday, Debra Lafave's attorney announced that his client would indeed be using an insanity defense. Just like her arraignment last month, Debra Lafave was a no-show as her attorney asked for a continuance during a pre-trial hearing to defend her against allegations of having sex with a student. A fourteen year old at Tampa's Greco Middle School says he and Lafave started engaging in sex acts at her Tampa-area apartment soon after school ended this summer. Then in June, he says they met twice for sex in Ocala -- both times with the boy's 15-year-old cousin acting as a chauffeur. Tampa teacher pleads not guilty to more charges of sex with student. A 23-year-old middle-school teacher pleaded not guilty to two more charges of having sex with a 14-year-old former student, her attorney said. Written pleas were filed on Debra Beasley Lafave's behalf Tuesday to two counts of lewd and lascivious battery in Hillsborough County, said her attorney, John Fitzgibbons. Hot for Student: A Teacher on Trial. When the 14-year-old student told his cousin that a "hot teacher" at his Tampa, Fla., middle school liked him, his cousin didn't believe it. So the student decided to prove it. He arranged for the two to meet reading teacher Debra LaFave one day in June, according to a police affidavit. They drove around in her SUV and bought smoothies. Then LaFave, 23, ceded the wheel to the cousin and repaired to the back seat with the student. According to the affidavit, "she moaned a couple of times, then laughed at something." When LaFave later made a pit stop, the affidavit reads, the student exclaimed to his cousin: "It was awesome." - Read More
