'I'm touching blood and I get to say, "I love you, Dad."' Questions swirl as missing woman returns after 10 yrs. BY SEAN D. HAMILL in McKeesport, Pa., and JOSE MARTINEZ in New York DAILY NEWS WRITERS The decade-long disappearance of a woman who resurfaced this week after running away as a 14-year-old has baffled cops and neighbors in her gritty western Pennsylvania town. As Tanya Kach tearfully reunited with the father she ran away from in 1996, plenty of unanswered questions remain about how she could allegedly be held hostage for years by a middle school janitor - just 2 miles from her home. "I'm touching blood and I get to say, 'I love you, Dad,'" said Kach, now 24, as she clutched her father's hand. Thomas Hose, 48, was being held for alleged sexual acts with a minor, but no criminal charges related to kidnapping have been filed. "Paul Harvey once said, 'And now, the rest of the story,'" said his attorney James Ecker. "Once we're in court, I guess we'll hear the rest of the story." Some residents in the steel-mill town are anxious to learn more. "I don't think the truth has come out yet," said Paul Coulter, 59, who lives three doors down from Hose. Police contend that Kach ran off with Hose after skipping class in eighth grade, but that for the next six years Hose held Kach captive in the house he shared with his parents and son. She allegedly had to use a bucket as a toilet and remain hidden from view. "Initially, he told her that if she left, he would kill her," said Allegheny County Police Sgt. Richard Mullen. Three years ago, she was allowed to start going out on her own, Mullen said. Yet most of Hose's neighbors rarely saw her until last summer. "In this tight-knit neighborhood, you've got your busybodies and your nosy people," said Russell Milslagle, 48, who lives four doors down from Hose. "But nobody said anything." Kach starting reconnecting with her past during solo visits to a small store in town, where she befriended shopkeeper Joe Sparico. On Tuesday, she walked into the store just after 9 a.m., crying. Sparico invited her into a back office. "Joe, I want to tell you a big story," she told him. "My name is Tanya Nicole Kach." Sparico said he called the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to confirm the tale. Police were called in, and within hours Kach was reunited with her father. |

Police seek hairdresser in case of missing girl Saturday, March 25, 2006 By Jonathan D. Silver, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Police last night were searching for a hairdresser accused of helping facilitate sexual encounters between a school security guard and teenage runaway Tanya Kach, who resurfaced this week in McKeesport after a decade-long disappearance. Investigators interviewed Judith Sokol, 57, on Wednesday about her involvement in the Kach case, but did not obtain an arrest warrant for her until yesterday. She is charged with statutory sexual assault and three counts of involuntary deviate sexual assault -- the same charges filed Wednesday against Thomas John Hose. Authorities described Ms. Sokol as an accomplice to Mr. Hose, 48, who was a security guard at Cornell Middle School when he met Miss Kach in 1995. She was 14 at the time. Miss Kach told police that she moved in with Mr. Hose in February 1996 and he kept her hidden for the next 10 years in a home on Soles Street that he shared with his parents and son. Within a week, they were sharing a bed, police said, and the two engaged in sex while she was still a minor. Mr. Hose had her record their encounters in a calendar book, "which she had so he could brag to co-workers and friends of him engaging in sex and how often," according to the affidavit supporting charges against him. Ms. Sokol told police she cut and dyed Miss Kach's hair and allowed her home to be used for sex between Miss Kach and Mr. Hose. She told police that she knew the pair's relationship was "inappropriate," the affidavit said. Ms. Sokol severed her ties with the two after being contacted by the county's Office of Children, Youth and Families, the affidavit said. It was not known when that contact occurred. Police yesterday tried to find Ms. Sokol at her apartment in Duquesne, but to no avail. Miss Kach emerged from hiding this week when she revealed her true identity to a store owner. |

Stylist Who Allegedly Concealed Girl's Identity Surrenders NORTH VERSAILLES, Pa. -- About 2:30 p.m. on Monday, the search for a hairdresser who police said helped to conceal a teenager for 10 years ended when the woman surrendered at District Judge Robert Barner's office in North Versailles. Allegheny County detectives had been looking for Judy Sokol since they issued a warrant for her arrest on Friday. Sokol, of Duquesne, is charged with one count each of statutory sexual assault, indecent assault, endangering the welfare of children and corruption of minors and three counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. Police said that Sokol did not participate in sexual acts with Tanya Kach, but knew about the sexual encounters between Kach and Thomas Hose and facilitated them. She is being held in the Allegheny County Jail on $10,000 straight bond. In the meantime, Kach, 24, had a reunion with her mother on Friday. Kach was 14 when she disappeared in McKeesport in 1996. A security guard at Kach's middle school was charged with hiding her for 10 years in his home. According to police, Hose, 48, allegedly brainwashed Kach and kept her hidden in his house. Hose remained in Allegheny County Jail after a bond hearing on Monday morning in which an Allegheny County judge increased the bond from $2,000 to $10,000 straight cash. He is charged with statutory sexual assault and three counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse. There are concerns at Cornell Middle School, where Kach attended 10 years ago and where she met Thomas Hose. Hose was working at the school until the case broke last week. |

By Jonathan D. Silver, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette A defendant accused of hiding a McKeesport teenager in his home reportedly stabbed himself and took pills this morning before his trial was to begin. Thomas Hose of McKeesport is accused in the alleged decade-long captivity of Tanya Kach. He and defendant Judith Sokol were to go on trial this morning in Allegheny County Court. But his attorney, James Ecker, held a courthouse press conference to announce Mr. Hose is in Mercy Hospital. Mr. Ecker said Mr. Hose's mother, Eleanor Hose, called him at 7 a.m. and said her son was sitting in a kitchen chair and bleeding in their Soles Street home. "He said he had stabbed himself and taken pills," Mr. Ecker said. The lawyer said his client stabbed himself "quite a few times," including in the chest. He did not know what pills he took. Mr. Ecker said he talked to his client last night and he seemed fine. But when he talked to him at the hospital this morning he sounded "out of it." Mr. Ecker said Mr. Hose was being stabilized but he was unsure of his condition and planned to go to the hospital. Judge John Zottola, who is presiding over the case, announced later that Mr. Hose's six to seven stab wounds were superficial. He said Mr. Hose would be committed for a mental evaluation. The judge also revoked Mr. Hose's bond. Judge Zottola said Ms. Sokol opted to have her trial continued to May 14, the new date set for Mr. Hose's trial. The judge also issued a gag order in the case. Miss Kach, 25, revealed in March that she had run away 10 years earlier and had vanished, spending that time in Mr. Hose's house. She was 14 and a student at a school where Mr. Hose was a security guard. More details in tomorrow's Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Pittsburgh Post-Gazette |
