Fort Leonard Wood soldier gets 30 years in prison for murder

The Associated Press

FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. | An Army reservist at Missouri's Fort Leonard Wood has been sentenced to 30 years in military prison for killing another soldier's wife.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Spc. Jermaine Johnson of Mobile, Ala., was sentenced late Friday. Earlier in the day, he pleaded guilty to murder at his court-martial at the mid-Missouri Army base. The charge was reduced from premeditated murder, and several other charges were dropped.

Johnson admitted killing 23-year-old Maria Silva, who was found dead last Oct. 14. She was the wife of Pfc. Benjamin Silva, who was also stationed at Fort Leonard Wood.

Besides the prison sentence, Johnson will receive a dishonorable discharge, forfeit all pay and benefits and reduced in rank to private.
