Casey Anthony case: Worker who found Caylee's remains gets fired
Roy Kronk is the Orange County meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's bones in the woods

Henry Pierson Curtis Sentinel Staff Writer

2:19 p.m. EDT, October 29, 2009

Roy Kronk, the utility meter reader who found Caylee Anthony's bones, has been fired by Orange County.

Kronk was terminated late Tuesday after failing to attend a disciplinary hearing for an as-yet-undisclosed issue, records show.

"Roy Kronk was scheduled to attend a pre-determination hearing yesterday to address issues pertaining to his employment with the County. He failed to show for the hearing, and a decision has been issued terminating his employment effective immediately," the county wrote Kronk's lawyer. "Therefore, the County shall not pay any legal fees associated with representing Mr. Kronk that are incurred from this point forward."

The letter was written by Assistant County Attorney Peter A. Lichtman to Orlando lawyer David Evans, who had been paid by the county to represent Kronk after the skeletal remains were found in December.

Evans responded to his client's dismissal by writing on Thursday, "The termination of Mr. Kronk relates to a difference of opinion between Mr. Kronk and Orange County regarding a workplace injury sustained by Mr. Kronk in the course of his job duties at an Orange County Utilities warehouse. This dispute arose because Mr. Kronk's management directed him to resume work duties after his injury, and Mr. Kronk and his health care providers did not consider it to be safe or medically appropriate to resume those duties at this time. "

Kronk became a nationally recognized figure on Dec. 11, when he discovered the skull of Caylee Anthony who had been missing for months since her mother Casey reported her absence in July. Kronk found the skeletal remains in the samea wooded lot he previously had searched near the Anthony home in the Chickasaw Oaks neighborhood in August. At the time, he was assigned to check utility meters for the county.

His discovery was a major development in the case that has attracted national and international attention..

The meter reader's successful sleuthing also embarrassed the Orange County Sheriff's Office which had searched the area and failed to find anything. A deputy who responded to a 911 call made by Kronk in August about suspicious-looking items in the wooded lot was fired for failing to adequately investigate the information.

Sudden fame followed the discovery.

Orange County hired Evans of the Mateer Harbert law firm to represent Kronk believing he would be overwhelmed by media requests for interviews. The county set a $10,000 limit on Evans' bills, which had to be raised $2,500 more even after Evans discounted his hourly rate about $100 to $225 an hour, records show.

Until then, Kronk had been a low-profile, $10.60-an- hour county worker. His discovery landed him on Good Morning America TV show in January. He later was given $5,000 by Orlando lawyer Mark NeJame, money NeJame had earned representing George and Cindy Anthony, the parents of Caylee Anthony's mother, Casey

Kronk had been working most recently in Orange County Utility's fiscal and administrative support division.

The county fired Kronk for failing to attend a pre-determination hearing on Tuesday, one step in the county's disciplinary process which can end in termination.

"He was basically unable to perform the essential functions of his job," said Ron Nielsen, interim Deputy Director of Orange County Utilities. "I'm not at liberty to discuss the reasons why."

Kronk most recently was working in the utilities warehouse as an inventory specialist responsible for receiving, issuing and repairing supplies. The utility employs about 800 workers, said Nielsen.

Evans responded that "Mr. Kronk is evaluating his legal options relating to his termination. In the meantime, Mr. Kronk is volunteering his time to a veteran's group in Osceola County--he is providing counseling to military veterans to help ease their adjustment to civilian life."

Check back for updates.

Post 'Tot Mom' Play Based On Anthony Case

Oscar-Winner Steven Soderbergh Directing Show

POSTED: Thursday, October 29, 2009
UPDATED: 1:44 pm EDT October 29, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Casey Anthony case is hitting the stage.

A play entitled "Tot Mom," staged by Oscar-winning director Steven Soderbergh, is scheduled to open Dec. 18 at the Sydney Theatre Company in Australia.

The show is formulated from transcripts from CNN's "Nancy Grace" show, in which Anthony is referred to as the "tot mom," along with court documents and police reports.

The play will run through Jan. 31.

Anthony, 23, remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the death of her daughter, Caylee, whose remains were found in December. Caylee was 2 years old when she was reported missing in the summer of 2008.

Anthony has pleaded not guilty, claiming that a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee.

Post Casey Anthony attorneys: Throw out murder indictment

Defense attorneys: The indictment is so vague, it must be dismissed

By Rene Stutzman, Orlando Sentinel

12:23 p.m. EST, November 3, 2009

Lawyers for Casey Anthony have filed new paperwork, asking a judge to throw out the murder charge against her.

This time, they allege that prosecutors and an Orange County grand jury put so little information in their indictment, she cannot possibly defend herself.

"Instead of starting with the crime and figuring out who did it, the state has essentially started with who did it and is now trying to figure out what crime she might have committed," the defense paperwork reads.

Anthony, 23, is in the Orange County Jail, charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter, Caylee Marie, in June 2008. The child was not reported missing for a month. Her body was found in a patch of woods in December, a few blocks from Anthony's home in south Orange County.

The indictment does not say how the child was killed or where, other than in Orange County.

As a consequence, Anthony's attorneys say Circuit Judge Stan Strickland should throw out the indictment.

It charges their client with capital murder. Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty.

Anthony also is facing another series of charges in a check forgery case. Prosecutors allege that she stole four blank checks from a friend in July 2008, forged them and cashed them for more than $650.

Prosecutors have charged her with 13 crimes in that case, including grand theft, forgery, uttering a forged instrument and fraudulent use of personal identification.

Defense attorneys Andrea Lyon and Jose Baez filed paperwork, asking the judge to dismiss nine of those counts.

The state is seeking to punish her for four acts, defense attorneys allege – forging four checks - so she should only be charged with four counts of forgery.

http://www.clickorlando.com/video/21517847/index.html

"The Globe" has obtained pictures from a cruise ship passenger who was on the boat with the Anthonys during a recent trip to the Bahamas.

George Anthony's tattoo, on his upper left chest, is a little girl basking in the sunshine, a reference to Caylee.

Cindy Anthony's tattoo, which is on her stomach, is a butterfly with the words "Caylee Marie" enscribed on it.

Brad Conway, the Anthonys' attorney, confirmed to Local 6 News that George and Cindy Anthony got the tattoos in memory of their granddaughter.

The remains of Caylee Marie Anthony were found in a wooded lot in December. Caylee was 2 years old when she was reported missing about five months earlier.

Caylee's mother, 23-year-old Casey Anthony, 23, remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in her daughter's death.

Casey Anthony has pleaded not guilty, saying a baby sitter had kidnapped Caylee.

More documents are expected to be released Friday in the criminal case against Casey Anthony, the 23-year-old accused of killing her daughter last year.

Several hundred pages will be released by the State Attorney's Office in response to a public record request. Anthony's defense team has already received the paperwork.

It's unclear what information will be in the documents. So far, more than 10,000 pages of documents have been made public.

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Caylee Marie, whose remains were found in woods less than a mile from her family's east Orange County home. Authorities ruled her death a homicide but could not determine how she died.

Post Caylee Anthony: Someone is using her image, mortifying company

posted by halboedeker on Nov 5, 2009 5:29:05 PM

The Caylee Anthony saga takes still another bizarre turn.

The company Mindspark, based in White Plains, N.Y., has been stunned to learn that someone has used its product Zwinky and inserted the murdered child's image in an ad.

"We knew nothing about it," said Mindspark spokeswoman Deborah Szajngarten. "Someone is using our brand against our wishes. We didn't authorize this. We're mortified. We are unbelievably disturbed."

Szajngarten said she knew nothing of 2-year-old Caylee or the headline-making murder case. The child's mother, Casey Anthony, is charged with the first-degree murder of her daughter.

Szajngarten said the Zwinky product has nothing to do with what this fake ad is presenting.

Rather, Zwinky.com offers a virtual world aimed at girls 13 and older. Zwinky seeks to foster a love of fashion in girls.

"We're absolutely horrified by this use of our brand," Szajngarten said. "We don't know yet who's put it up."

But Mindspark is working to find out.

"It's not ours," she said. "We're trying to get it taken down as quickly as possible. There's a completely dedicated effort to getting it taken down as soon as possible."

Alert Casey Anthony case: Syringe in bottle contained traces of chloroform

FBI lab tests detected the dangerous chemical in evidence from the area where Caylee Marie's remains were found.

The State Attorney's Office release this photo in the Casey Anthony case. (State Attorney's Office / November 6, 2009)

By Walter Pacheco, Bianca Prieto, Rene Stutzman and Anika Myers Palm, SENTINEL STAFF WRITERS

11:42 a.m. EST, November 6, 2009

FBI lab technicians detected traces of chloroform inside a sports drink and plastic syringe recovered near the scene where the remains of Caylee Marie were found in 2008.

Those details and others are included in the more than 2,100 pages of documents released today by the State Attorney's Office in the criminal case against Casey Anthony -- the 23-year-old accused of killing her daughter last year.

The report from the FBI's lab shows the Cool Blue-flavored Gatorade drink contained an "unknown liquid." The bottle also contained a plastic bag labeled "Disposable Syringe Kit" with a plastic syringe inside of the bag.

A report generated in June and labeled "Summary of results" by Dr. Michael Rickenbach of the FBI indicates chemical tests show the syringe contained chloroform, testosterone, ethanol and water.

Chloroform has been depicted in movies and on television when a person uses a rag soaked in the liquid to cover the mouth and nose of another, making the victim lose consciousness. A person can die if too much of the chemical is inhaled. Chloroform also is the byproduct of contact between chorine used in swimming pools and skin, sweat or urine. Commercially, it is used in refrigeration.

Testosterone is a natural occuring hormone in men and women. Levels decline gradually with age and the hormone can be prescribed as a controlled steroid to prevent or reduce osteoporosis, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and other diseases and disorders.

Investigative reports released last year show that someone at the Anthony home used the family computer to search the Internet for directions on how to make chloroform and ' neck-breaking.' Investigators also found traces of chloroform in the trunk of Casey Anthony's car, earlier reports show.

The FBI reports released today also show a doll recovered from Casey Anthony's white 1998 Pontiac Sunfire GT had "faint yellowish stains" on the front and back of its white clothing. The June lab tests showed slight traces of chloroform residue on the doll, according to Rickenbach.

But a later test in July indicated no chloroform on the doll. Other reports show the yellow stains may have been urine.

The documents show photographs of the doll, Gatorade bottle and syringe found at the scene.

Also included in the latest reports are communications between FBI lab technicians and sheriff's office investigators.

Anthony is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 2-year-old Caylee Marie, whose remains were found in woods less than a mile from her family's east Orange County home.

Authorities ruled her death a homicide but could not determine how she died.

The state is seeking the death penalty against Anthony, who remains in the Orange County Jail.

So far, more than 10,000 pages of documents have been made public.

Post Report Focuses On Caylee's Remains

Casey Anthony Charged With Murder In Daughter's Death

POSTED: Friday, November 6, 2009
UPDATED: 4:55 pm EST November 6, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An entomologist report shows that the body of Caylee Anthony was dumped in a wooded lot in late June 2008 or early July 2008, which conflicts with a previous statement made by Casey Anthony's defense team.

The report was part of 2,100 pages released on Friday by the state attorney's office released as part of a public records request. The newly released documents and images have already been seen by Anthony's defense team.

Anthony, 23, remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the death of her daughter, Caylee, whose remains were found in December. Caylee was 2 years old when she was reported missing in July 2008.

Anthony has pleaded not guilty, saying that Caylee was kidnapped by a baby sitter.

An attorney representing Anthony recently stated in court that the defense has evidence showing Anthony is innocent, claiming that it could prove Caylee's body was dumped in the woods after Anthony was in jail.

The entomologist report also states that Caylee's body was moved from the trunk of her mother's car after decomposing for a few days.

A Disney bag containing a Gatorade bottle and a syringe was found near Caylee's remains, and an FBI chemical analysis shows the syringe had testosterone in it, according to the newly released documents.

Post Casey Anthony's attorneys throw suspicion on Roy Kronk

Casey Anthony's attorney: Investigators never looked into Roy Kronk's background.

By Walter Pacheco, Sentinel Staff Writer

12:32 p.m. EST, November 20, 2009

Casey Anthony's lawyers on NBC's Today Show this morning said former meter reader Roy Kronk is as much a suspect in Caylee Marie's death as their own client, Casey Anthony.

"There is as much circumstantial evidence implicating Roy Kronk as there is implicating our client," said Andrea Lyon, one of Anthony's defense attorneys, to Today's host Matt Lauer. "He's the only one who's been with the body. He's the only one who magically discovers it. He takes a day off before he discovers it in December."

Lead defense attorney Jose Baez told Lauer Orange County sheriff's investigators did not look into Kronk's past.

"This is a situation where law enforcement never looked into this witness, who is a critical witness and never investigated his background," Baez told Lauer.
Orange County sheriff's officials have said Kronk was never a suspect and is not linked to the Anthony family.

Anthony's defense attorneys deposed Kronk on Thursday at the State Attorney's Office. He is the former Orange County meter reader who discovered Caylee Anthony's remains on Dec. 11 and a key witness in the upcoming trial against Anthony.

Kronk, who has since been fired from his county job, found the 2-year-old's remains in woods less than a mile from the girl's family home in east Orange County.

County officials fired Kronk in October after failing to attend a disciplinary hearing related to excessive absenteeism after an injury at work. Records show he used up all his sick time and medical leave.

Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony, 23, is charged with first-degree murder in the toddler's death. She told deputies that she left Caylee with a baby sitter who vanished, but investigators say the sitter does not exist.

Her defense team maintains that someone other than Casey Anthony put the child's body in the woods and that there is no evidence against their client. "Suspicion? You bet," Lyon said. "Evidence? No."

Post Could New Evidence Help Caylee's Mother?

Caylee Anthony's Mother's Lawyers Point at Man Who Helped Find 2-Year-Old's Body; Casey Anthony Is Charged in Caylee's Murder

CBS) Attorneys for Casey Anthony say they have new evidence that could indicate she didn't kill her two-year-old daughter, Caylee Anthony, and instead could implicate the man who helped police find Caylee's remains.

Casey is awaiting trial on first-degree murder charges. She's pleaded not guilty and says a baby sitter kidnapped Caylee. Prosecutors say they'll seek the death penalty if Casey is convicted of first-degree murder.
Caylee was last seen in June 2008. Her disappearance wasn't reported until a month later. Her body was found in December 2008 in a wooded area less than a mile from the Orlando, Fla. home she and Casey shared with Casey's parents.

But, reports CBS News Correspondent Kelly Cobiella, Casey's lawyers are asking the judge in the case to allow evidence they say shows the meter reader who helped in the search for Caylee's body could be the little girl's killer.

Roy Kronk was hailed as a hero last year, for helping police find Caylee's remains.

But Casey's lawyers say they've uncovered a dark side.

They gave CBS News video of April Hensley, who was 11 when Kronk lived with her mother, telling them, "Sometimes he would, you know, walk in while I was putting my clothes on."

April, along with two of Kronk's ex-wives, were interviewed by Casey's attorneys, who assert Kronk has a history of being inappropriate with children, and violent toward women.

Also on video provided to CBS News, an attorney for Casey asks one of Kronk's ex-wives, Jill Keerley, "When you learned that Roy Kronk had found the remains of Caylee Anthony, what went through your mind?"

"That he had done it," Keerley replies.

"Done it, meaning...?" the lawyer asks.

"He probably was the one who murdered Caylee Anthony, or had something to do with it," Keerley responds.

"You had mentioned that he had a certain saying about duct tape," the lawyer says.

"Yeah," answers Keerley, quoting Kronk, " 'It's a hundred-mile-an-hour duct tape, nothing can get through it.' "

Investigators found duct tape on Caylee's skull.

Casey's defense team admits it has no physical evidence to support its theory, Cobiella points out. And Kronk's lawyers say this is just a ploy to deflect blame from the real suspect -- Casey Anthony.

Legal analyst Wendy Murphy told Cobiella, "(Caylee's) mother is the one who's charged with a crime here. So, you can point the finger at Mr. Kronk all day long ... it doesn't explain away the evidence against Casey Anthony."

There are no police reports on Kronk, or arrest reports, that have surfaced, Cobiella adds, to substantiate the claims against him. And investigators ruled Kronk out as a possible suspect early in the investigation.

Attorney Linda Kenney Baden is among the ones representing Casey Anthony. She spoke with "Early Show" co-anchor Maggie Rodriguez about the latest developments:

Post Motion: Kronk Could Have Killed Caylee

Anthony's Defense Says Meter Reader Has History Of Abuse, Restraining Women

POSTED: Thursday, November 19, 2009
UPDATED: 8:25 am EST November 20, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Just after wrapping up the first day of his deposition, Casey Anthony's defense team has filed a motion alleging the man who found Caylee Anthony's remains could be responsible for the toddler's death.

Defense attorney Jose Baez filed the motion "to introduce prior bad acts and other circumstantial evidence pertaining to Roy Kronk" around 5 p.m. Thursday. The motion lays out the defense's strategy for the first time and claims a third party is responsible for Caylee's death.

The motion claims that Roy Kronk, the Orange County meter reader that discovered Caylee's remains in December 2008, has a history of abusing and restraining women with duct tape as well as holding them against their will. Caylee's remains were discovered in a wooded area near the Anthony family home.

The motion also alleges that Kronk could have a history of inappropriate behavior with young girls.

The defense said it interviewed two of Kronk's ex-wives and his son.

One ex said Kronk kidnapped her and held her for two weeks against her will using duct tape to restrain her.

The defense also claimed Kronk knew the location of Caylee's remains and may have had possession of them in November 2008.

The defense said the prosecution only has circumstantial evidence against Anthony in the first-degree murder case against her, and according to Florida law, for circumstantial evidence to prevail, all other options must be ruled out.

The motion asks the court "to allow Anthony to introduce at trial circumstantial evidence tending to indicate that a third party, and not Miss Anthony, is equally likely to be responsible for the death of the child Caylee Marie Anthony."

These allegations come the same day Kronk was deposed for several hours and the defense team unveiled its newest member, Mort Smith, a private investigator and professor at DePaul University.

Kronk's attorney, David Evans, issued a news release Thursday evening stating his client is a witness, not a suspect.

"Shortly after adjourning the deposition, the Anthony defense team filed a Motion, Memorandum of Law, and accompanying materials suggesting that Roy Kronk, the individual who found Caylee Anthony's remains and repeatedly reported his find to law enforcement agencies, should be considered a suspect in the murder of Caylee Anthony," Evans said. "He voluntarily appeared today and truthfully responded to all questions asked by Anthony's attorney. He has cooperated fully with law enforcement from Day One. He has nothing to hide, and has hidden nothing."

Evans said Kronk has always understood he may become a target of the defense.

"In their zeal to defend Casey Anthony, defense counsel has filed papers with the Court that are filled with allegations that have no basis in fact and falsely accuse Mr. Kronk of various types of bad behavior," Evans said. "The State will respond to these papers in due course in the criminal proceedings. As for Mr. Kronk, he vehemently denies the allegations against him and is confident that he will be vindicated. In the meantime, as he stated early on in this case, no good deed goes unpunished."

Kronk first reported finding something suspicious in the woods near the Anthonys' home on Aug. 11, 2008, but after three phone calls, a deputy came out and said he found nothing. That deputy, Richard Cain, was later fired from the Sheriff's Office for lying to his superiors about his encounter with Kronk.

Kronk is expected to be a key witness for the prosecution, but the defense apparently hired Smith to dig through Kronk's personal life.

Kronk's deposition will continue on Friday.

Anthony, 23, remains jailed on first-degree murder charges in the Caylee's death. Caylee's grandmother reported the toddler missing in July 2008, one month after she was last seen. Anthony initially told investigators she had left her daughter with a nanny named Zenaida Gonzalez.

Post Kronk's Ex-Wife: I Thought He Probably Killed Caylee

Casey Anthony, 23, Charged In Death Of Daughter

POSTED: Friday, November 20, 2009
UPDATED: 12:52 pm EST November 20, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An ex-wife of the former Orange County meter reader who discovered the remains of Caylee Anthony told the CBS "Early Show" that she thought her ex-husband was responsible for or involved in the girl's death.

In a taped video interview that was aired Friday on the "Early Show," Jill Kerley was asked about her former husband, Roy Kronk, who found Caylee's remains in December in a wooded lot near the Anthony family home in east Orange County.

Kronk was deposed Thursday by the defense team of Casey Anthony, who is charged with first-degree murder in the death of her daughter, Caylee.

"When you learned that Roy Kronk had found the remains of Caylee Anthony, what went through your mind?" a representative of Casey Anthony's defense team asked Kerley.

"That he had done it," she said.

"'Done it,' meaning?" the representative asked.

"He probably was the one that had murdered Caylee Anthony or had something to do with it," Kerley said.

Linda Kenney Baden, an attorney on Casey Anthony's defense team, said on the "Early Show" that Kerley's statements prove that authorities have not done their job in investigating Caylee's death.

"These people have no reason or motive to lie," said Kenney Baden, referring to Kerley, another ex-wife and a daughter of an ex-girlfriend of Kronk's.

"But it's an ex-wife, who may have an ax to grind," said Maggie Rodriguez of the CBS "Early Show."

"Listen, one ex-wife is dying of cancer. This is like a death-bed statement. It's incredible," Kenney Baden said. "The point about this is that no one investigated any of this."

Casey Anthony lead defense attorney Jose Baez filed a motion following Kronk's deposition "to introduce prior bad acts and other circumstantial evidence pertaining to Roy Kronk." The motion included DVDs of the interviews with Kronk's former family members.

The motion claims that Kronk has a history of abusing and restraining women with duct tape as well as holding them against their will. The motion also alleges that Kronk could have a history of inappropriate behavior with young girls.

"Sometimes he would, you know, walk in while I was putting clothes on," the daughter of Kronk's ex-girlfriend said.

She also claimed that Kronk would make comments about videotaping her having sex with animals. Kronk denies the allegations.

One of Kronk's ex-wives said Kronk kidnapped her and held her for two weeks against her will using duct tape to restrain her. Duct tape was also found on Caylee's remains, according to documents released in the case.

The defense also claimed Kronk knew the location of Caylee's remains and may have had possession of them in November 2008.

The defense said the prosecution only has circumstantial evidence against Casey Anthony in the first-degree murder case against her, and according to Florida law, for circumstantial evidence to prevail, all other options must be ruled out.

The motion asks the court "to allow Anthony to introduce at trial circumstantial evidence tending to indicate that a third party, and not Miss Anthony, is equally likely to be responsible for the death of the child Caylee Marie Anthony."

Kronk's attorney, David Evans, said his client has become a target of the Casey Anthony's defense team.

"Roy is the guy who has been selected, apparently, by the defense to be the guy to be dumped on, and they dumped on him big time today," Evans said.

Evan issued a news release Thursday evening stating his client is a witness, not a suspect.

"Shortly after adjourning the deposition, the Anthony defense team filed a motion, memorandum of law and accompanying materials suggesting that Roy Kronk, the individual who found Caylee Anthony's remains and repeatedly reported his find to law enforcement agencies, should be considered a suspect in the murder of Caylee Anthony," Evans said.

None of the new information will be heard by the jury in Casey Anthony's murder trial unless the judge rules for the defense on the latest motion and allows it into evidence.

The state has yet to respond to the new information, but Kronk is expected to be a key witness for the prosecution in the Casey Anthony case.

Casey Anthony, 23, has pleaded not guilty, originally claiming that a baby sitter had taken Caylee.

Hearings in Casey Anthony's check fraud and murder cases are scheduled for Dec. 11.
