Ex-wife still missing. Authorities hope show shakes lose tips

America's Most Wanted to feature case of fugitive ex-wife of murdered Reno car dealer

By Jaclyn O’Malley • jomalley@rgj.com • November 7, 2009

Plumas County, Calif., authorities are hoping tonight’s America’s Most Wanted feature on the August 2008 murder of a Reno businessman will lead to tips about his accused killer’s whereabouts.

Nazira Maria Cross, also known as Nazira Ugalde, is charged in a $1 million warrant with the first-degree murder of her ex-husband, Michael Cross, who was found buried Aug. 1, 2008, at his Lovelock ranch.

Detectives believe her motive was financial gain.

Authorities believe the Costa Rican-born woman fled to her home country, or possibly is in another South or Central American country. While Plumas County Sheriff’s investigators have declined to say how Michael Cross died, America’s Most Wanted reports detectives told them he was poisoned.

Michael Cross, 55, owned Kietzke Auto Sales in Reno and Lovelock Motors. Investigators said he was slain at his Chilcoot, Calif., home and buried on his Lovelock ranch.

Nazira Cross had asked neighbors in Chilcoot help get Michael Cross into her car so she could take him to a Reno hospital. She told them he was suffering from a medical problem. When they did not hear back from him and learned he was never admitted to a hospital, neighbors called police.

Reno police found Nazira Cross at her ex-husband’s home on Tacoma Way in Reno. They said her bags were packed, left by the front door. She told them he died suddenly and she had buried him, said Sgt. Steve Peay, who heads the Plumas County Sheriff’s Office’s investigations unit. While authorities were waiting on a cause of Michael Cross’s death, they believe Nazira Cross fled the country.

She was charged with his death in March. The couple had been married for about eight years before they divorced in January 2008. They met in Costa Rica when Michael Cross was on vacation.

America’s Most Wanted will show the feature at 9 p.m. on Fox.
