Question Prison Suicide By Dehydration???

Prison Inmate Dies Of 'Suicide By Dehydration'
Corrections Officials Investigate Cause Of Death

CAMERON, Mo. -- Officials are trying to figure out what caused the death of a prison inmate earlier this summer, KMBC's Chris Nagus reported Tuesday.

In June, Vern Garrett died behind bars in the Western Missouri Correctional Center. He was in isolation and on suicide watch when he died. His cause of death was listed as "suicide by dehydration" -- which has corrections officials and a watchdog group wondering what happened.

"Suicide by dehydration -- you really have to think about that," said Karen Russo, the director of the Wrongful Death and Injury Institute, an organization that tracks prisoner deaths.

Russo said the cause of death sounds suspicious.

"If you see somebody refusing water, you can force him to take water," Russo said.

Police said they are working with the Department of Corrections to investigate Garrett's death.

"We are at the very beginning stages -- square one," said Cameron Police Chief Corey Sloan.

"If I'm the Garrett family, am I comfortable (with) the police department doing an investigation? Not just no, but hell no," Russo said.

Sloan said his department has handled similar investigations before and will check if a crime has been committed.

Russo said there should be surveillance video to monitor prisoners. Police would not confirm if they are reviewing any tapes in the investigation, but they said they are reviewing Garrett's records.
